August 2014

Happy New Year!
We are into full swing with the busy time of the year for our organization.  Our first fundraising event of the year, the St. Andrew’s Fish Dinner, is right around the corner, and we are already gearing up for Festa Italiana 2015!  Get ready for another full year of fun and activity!
Let’s start off the new year by congratulating one of our own.  Anthony
Totta’s granddaughter, Kate Cosentino, has been a regular performer at our Festa Italiana for the last 3 years, volunteering her time to entertain our crowds.  On January 30th Kate will be debuting her new album, with many of her own original written songs, at RC’s in Martin City at 7pm.  Please do your best to attend and show your support.
“UNICAN’s who eat together, stay together.” - Frank Cherrito
Our monthly meeting will be Wednesday January 28th at Johnny
Cascone’s in Overland park.  Cash bar for Cocktails will be at 6pm and dinner ($20 per person) will start around 7pm.  Come join us as we break bread together for the first time as an organization in 2015.
The 2015 Diplomatic Ball is coming up in March.  Please join us as we represent our Italian Heritage with the Kansas City Ethnic Community.  The schedule for the evening includes a cash bar at 6pm, seating and Grand Entry at 6:45 and dinner served at 7pm.  This year dinner will be a Mexican Style Dinner featuring Pan Seared Chicken Breast (you can also choose from a vegetarian or fish substitute for dinner).  Cultural Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Rose Marie’s Fiesta Mexicana 50th Anniversary, followed by ballroom dancing and Mariachi from 9pm to midnight.  We have 4 spots remaining at our table, and cost will be $70 per person.  Table seating is 10, so if we get a large enough response we will try to fill a second table.  Please RSVP back directly to me at your earliest opportunity so we can submit all of our UNICAN names together.

“To be a good UNICAN, you have to be a giver, not a taker.” - Phil Balano, Sr.
Please mark Friday February 20th on your calendar as we will need your volunteer support with our annual Fish Dinner at St. Andrews.  Volunteers will be needed in the kitchen, serving dinner plates and selling beverages and raffle tickets.  This is a fun event and dinner will include fish or fried shrimp and pasta.  We will also need your help selling dinner pre-sale tickets, so please show your support by bringing your families out and enjoying a meal with UNICO and St. Andrew’s.
“We all joined UNICO for a reason, what’s yours?!” - Michael Mange
For me, joining UNICO was an opportunity to spend time with my father.  Work and responsibilities often pull family and friends in different directions and UNICO created a reason to spend time together. It has grown to so much more for me, but that is how it all started.  Why not invite a friend or family member to join with you?  That would give each of you a reason to get together at least once a month, and you never know, your membership might also grow into something you never knew it could be.  UNICO will cover the dinner cost for all first time guests, so don’t be afraid to bring someone new with you!

In closing, it is time to spread the word on scholarship opportunities.  The Kansas City Chapter of  UNICO has $40,000 in scholarships planned for graduating high school seniors of Italian-American Heritage for 2015.   In addition, UNICO National offers many of their own scholarship opportunities as well, so make sure you review all in detail and share this opportunity with our Italian-American Community.  If you know of a qualified candidate, please refer them to our website where they can find all details and applications.

Distinti Saluti,

Michael Cucchiara
