February 2015

Dear Friends -

Love is in the air! With Valentine’s day just a few days away, I hope everyone gets to spend the weekend enjoying the company of family and friends. The winter weather continues to play tricks with the temperatures, so make sure everyone stays bundled up when the frigid air sneaks up on you! We are well into some of the most critical months for our organization’s success, so please make sure everyone is in tune with our activities and events, as we will continue to call upon our members for support with all aspects of our fundraising, planning and volunteer efforts.

“UNICAN’s who eat together, stay together.” - Frank Cherrito

Our monthly meeting will be Wednesday February 25th at Johnny C’s Deli. Drinks will be at 6pm and dinner ($20 per person) will start around 7pm. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the company of our friends and get updated on all the happenings within our organization.

“To be a good UNICAN, you have to be a giver, not a taker.” - Phil Balano, Sr.

Just another reminder, but Friday February 20th is our annual Fish Dinner at St. Andrews. For 2015 we are again asking all UNICAN’s to either purchase tickets through their own donation, or sell them to their family, friends and neighbors. You can purchase tickets directly at the dinner if you are able to attend, or mail a donation check directly to our Treasurer. Please make all checks payable to UNICO. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children.

In addition to your attendance, we are still in need of volunteers to help support the event. Specifically we are looking for 2nd shift servers from 6pm to 8pm to help behind the counter. If you or a member of your family is available to help out, please contact our volunteer coordinator directly. joe.nastasi@wfafinet.com

Holy Rosary will be having their Shrimp Dinner All You Can Eat on Friday March 27th, 2015. We are looking for a number of volunteers that would be able to help with this event. You can reach out to me to coordinate, or you can contact Fr. Ariel Durian directly at arieldurian@outlook.com to offer your support. Even if you are unable to volunteer, don’t let that stop you from attending and getting your fill of shrimp! I will share more details as we get a little closer to the dinner.

“We all joined UNICO for a reason, what’s yours?!” - Michael Mange

I am very excited to announce that our membership continues to climb thanks to your efforts. We continue to encourage all to bring a family member or friend with you to our next dinner. UNICO will cover the dinner cost for all first time guests, so don’t be afraid to bring someone new with you!

In closing, I would like to remind everyone that our scholarship deadline is March 12th for our local chapter. The Kansas City Chapter of UNICO has $40,000 in scholarships planned for graduating high school seniors of Italian-American Heritage for 2015. In addition, UNICO National offers many of their own scholarship opportunities as well, so please be sure to share this opportunity with our Italian-American Community. If you know of a qualified candidate, please refer them to our website where they can find all details and applications.

Distinti Saluti,

Michael Cucchiara
