January 2015

Dear Friends -
I have officially finished my first term as president unscathed, and I am looking forward to another year of the challenge.  I could not have made it this year without the continues support of our officers and everyone that supports this group, so I want to sincerely thank you all for the past year… and for the year to come.We had a great turnout at dinner, so thank you to those who were able to attend.

The ceremony included in the oath of the entire cabinet, and I am proud to present to you your officers for the 2014-2015 year.President—Michael Cucchiara; 1st Vice President—Marc Enna; 2nd VP—Jack Ancona; 3rd VP—Jerry Fornelli; Secretary—Tony Conforti; Treasurer—Melchior Cucchiara (Mike Sr.); Health &Welfare—Charlie Malaponte; Scholarship Chairman—Dave Sullivan; Finance Chairman—JoeNastasi; Sergeant at Arms—Chuck Romano; Co-Event Chairman—Frank Cherrito; Presidential Advisor / Co-Event Chairman—Michael Mange

During our meeting we had an open discussion about additional opportunities for our organization to develop and guarantee our continued growth.  Mr. Jerry Viviano presented a program to continue our contact with our scholarship winners, and Mr. Frank Cherrito presented a call to arms for continued scholarship and sponsorship support.

With the “Adopt a Scholarship Winner” program, we are asking UNICAN’s to join a group of volunteers who will be assigned the name 1 scholarship winner.  Our request is that as a UNICAN, you follow up with that winner at least once a semester with an email, phone call or letter to try and develop a rapport.  We want our scholarship winners to know we care about their future, beyond just giving them a 1 time scholarship.  For more information, please contact Jerry directly at viviano.jerry@kc.sysco.com.

We are continuing our Annual Scholarship Appeal program, where we request support directly towards our scholarships.  Donations can be made specifically to our scholarship program.  In addition, based on qualifying levels, you can make a donation of $500 or more that UNICO will match.  With this donation, UNICO will present a scholarship to a worthy student in the name of your choice.  For more information on this program please contact Mr. Frank Cherrito at frankc07000@gmail.com.

We are also in the process of seeking and securing additional sponsorship support for the 2015 Festa Italiana.  A committee is being put together with the primary focus of following up on sponsorship leads.  If you have contact information for solid sponshorship leads and would like to share, or are able to support, you can also contact our Festa Committee Co-Chairman, Frank Cherrito or Mr. Michael Mange at michael.mange@gmail.com. “UNICAN’s who eat together, stay together.” - Frank Cherrito

Our next scheduled dinner will be at Garozzo’s in Overland Park on Wednesday August 20th.  Cocktails will start at 6pm and dinner will be served at 7pm.  Cost of dinner will be $20 per person.  All first time guests are welcome to attend, as UNICO will cover the cost of their dinner.

“To be a good UNICAN, you have to be a giver, not a taker.” - Phil Balano, Sr.
Our next fund raising event is the Annual Microbrew Festival held at Zona Rosa on Saturday August 16th from 4pm to 9pm.  We will need a limited number of volunteers for this event to help pour, so please let us know if you are available.  Pre-sale tickets will be $25 each and can be purchased beginning July 11th at Zona Rosa customer service or www.eventbrite.com.   At Eventbrite, search “UNICO Microbrew Festival” for online tickets.  There is a service fee for use of Eventbrite ticket purchasing.  Tickets will be $30 at the gate.
“We all joined UNICO for a reason, what’s yours?!” - Michael Mange

With our incoming class of officers, Festa Italiana fresh in our mind, and the Microbrew Festival right around the corner, now is the prime time to recruit that friend or family member you believe would be a great addition to our organization.  Please invite them to be your guest at the next meeting and UNICO will cover the cost of their dinner.  We are only as strong as our membership, and we are always looking for additional friends and family to support.

I want to take a brief moment to inform or remind everyone of a chapter benefit that you may or may not be aware of.  As a member of the KC Chapter or UNICO, if you have a member of your family living at home (self, spouse, child) that is hospitalized for an injury or illness, UNICO will make a one time $50 donation to a charity of your choice in your name.  In addition, if you have an immediate family member (self, spouse, child or parent) who passes, UNICO will make a one time $100 donation to a charity of your choice in your name.  For more questions to request this benefit, please contact our Health and Wellness Chairman Mr. Charlie Malaponte at 816-420-0172 with the details.

As we completed our fiscal year, I need to send out a reminder to everyone that Annual Dues need to be paid for the next year.  If you are a new member that joined after 1/1/2014, then nothing is due.  All other members need to submit their $80 back to the chapter.  Dues can be paid in one of the following ways:
• Online at www.unicokc.org you can simply click on the “Pay Dues” button on the top of the page.
• Bring your payment to the next meeting on August 20th.

• Mail a check directly to our Treasurer.  Checks should be made out to UNICO KC.   UNICO Kansas City   c/o Mike Cucchiara   1307 NE 86th St.

Thank you again, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting!
